A bird belongs in the sky.

“Here, the longing to fly meets the reality of confinement a powerful way to explore what it feels like to know there must be more to life while feeling unable to reach it,” she added. “The connection to her mother makes that longing even more affecting.”

Reading through that lens, Driven said: “’Freedom’ raises a painful question: what happens when a daughter recognizes something of her mother’s captivity in herself?

“The song’s questions about her mother’s side, her father’s side, and a possible generational struggle deepen that tension,” Driven said. “They suggest a search for the origins of pain rather than an easy explanation. Where did this begin? Why does it keep returning? Can the cycle end here?”

She said those questions give “’Freedom’ a story that reaches beyond one woman’s struggle.”

Driven said the artwork, depicting Hall in chains with her gaze lowered, extends the song’s imagery of captivity.

“In this reading, the chains become a visual expression of burdens that aren’t always visible: heartbreak, fear, emotional exhaustion, and the feeling of being trapped in your own thoughts,” she said.

“The imagery can evoke the longing for liberation associated with the Underground Railroad,” Driven added. “That historical parallel belongs to a reading of the work; its emotional connection rests in the pursuit of a way out, and the belief that freedom exists beyond present suffering.”

She said “Freedom” also enters difficult territory through references to anxiety and suicidal thoughts.

“These moments deserve care,” Driven said. “They belong to the song’s narrative and should not be treated as a diagnosis or evidence of Hall’s current mental health.

“Within that narrative, they reveal the depth of the struggle against which her determination takes shape,” she added. “And that determination matters.”

Even while asking when freedom will come, Driven said the voice at the center of the song continues to resist surrender.

“The armor of God becomes an expression of readiness to fight,” she said. “Faith remains present amid unanswered questions, rather than erasing them.”

Driven said that tension gives the song its “goosebump potential: the vulnerability of someone admitting how much she hurts, alongside the resolve of someone still reaching for a future.”

For listeners who recognize that feeling of carrying a broken heart, struggling to speak, or wondering whether family patterns will ever loosen their grip, Driven said “’Freedom’ offers a point of connection.

“Its questions leave room for their own,” she said. “What are you trying to break free from? What have you carried for too long? What would freedom look like in your life?”

She said Hall’s “Freedom” holds its hope within those questions.

“The cage is present,” Driven said. “The pain is present.
