From thousands of flag-waving fans in Brooklyn to a surprise moment alongside music legend Stevie Wonder in Washington, D.C., the Trinidad and Tobago soca group KesTheBand helped put Caribbean music and culture at the center of one of the year\u2019s biggest weekends for the diaspora.<\/p>\n
The Labor Day weekend celebration began Friday, Sept. 4, when KesTheBand took the stage at Soca Fest at the Brooklyn Museum, drawing thousands of fans from across the region.<\/p>\n
The crowd reflected the diversity and multigenerational spirit of Caribbean culture in New York. Young fans danced alongside parents and grandparents as Caribbean flags filled the venue and music brought together people from Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Guyana, and beyond.<\/p>\n
New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani introduced the group, earning loud applause as he spoke about the important role the Caribbean diaspora plays in shaping the city.<\/p>\n
The appearance was a fitting moment for KesTheBand, whose music has become synonymous with the global growth of contemporary soca. Led by frontman Kees Dieffenthaller, the group has helped introduce Caribbean sounds to audiences far beyond Trinidad and Tobago.<\/p>\n

The following night, KesTheBand traveled to Washington, D.C., where the group performed at DC JazzFest. The appearance produced an unexpected and historic moment when legendary singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder joined the band onstage.<\/p>\n
Together, Wonder and KesTheBand performed an energetic mashup featuring Wonder\u2019s classic \u201cI Just Called to Say I Love You\u201d and the band’s soca anthem \u201cSavannah Grass.\u201d<\/p>\n
The collaboration represented a major moment not only for the band but for Caribbean music, bringing soca together with one of the most influential artists in modern music.<\/p>\n
For Dieffenthaller, the moment carried special meaning. He later reflected on social media that Wonder\u2019s music had been part of his life since childhood.<\/p>\n
The whirlwind weekend continued as Dieffenthaller prepared to serve as an honorary grand marshal of the 59th Annual New York Caribbean Carnival Parade alongside reggae icon Buju Banton.<\/p>\n
