Henry is one of Trinidad and Tobago\u2019s leading contemporary cultural voices \u2014 a calypsonian, vocalist, saxophonist, and cultural practitioner \u2014whose career spans more than two decades.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Singing since age six, Henry told Caribbean Life on Jan. 5 that she formed an early, lasting relationship with the performing arts, viewing it as purpose: Music that tells people&#8217;s stories and documents social, political, and moral realities.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As a child, Henry won numerous junior competitions and represented Trinidad and Tobago on international stages, including Notting Hill Carnival.<br \/>\nShe said these experiences confirmed her calling and laid the foundation for a career marked by excellence, integrity, and dedication to culture and community.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A trained saxophonist, Henry benefitted from mentorship by leading figures in the performing arts.<br \/>\nShe said her artistic development was shaped by the guidance of her music teacher\/coach Anthony Woodroffe, Sr.; Dr. Roy Cape; Dr. Leroy Calliste (Black Stalin); Errol Ince; Dr. Ray Holman; Dr. Hollis Liverpool (The Mighty Chalkdust); and Aldric Farrell (Lord Pretender).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Henry said these relationships deepened her musicianship and reinforced her understanding of the performing arts as \u201ca living, evolving narrative\u2014one that remains relevant across generations, even as its sound, form, and presentation continue to change.\u201d<br \/>\nHer artistry is rooted in values instilled by her parents and her scholarship.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>She earned a master\u2019s degree in cultural studies and a BFA in music from the University of Trinidad and Tobago, integrating academic research with professional practice.<br \/>\nHenry said her spiritual background and early musical training strengthened her desire to reach people meaningfully, using sound, rhythm, and lyric to \u201cconnect, challenge, motivate and inspire.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Known for her understated stage presence, sharp vocals, and resonant performances, Henry commands attention through substance over spectacle.<br \/>\nHer powerful, electrifying performances and assured stage presence often earn encores, showing her ability to connect authentically with audiences.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Her style seamlessly blends groove-driven melodies with rich, bass-forward arrangements, drawing inspiration from her dual roles as both vocalist and instrumentalist.<br \/>\nHenry said she sings with conviction, addressing political, social, and national issues, guided by a belief that \u201call aspects of life are interconnected and must be confronted when necessary.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Her catalogue demonstrates a lifelong commitment to the performing arts, serving as a guiding force, commentary, and moral compass.<br \/>\nFrom her junior years, Henry said songs such as \u201cThe Solution,\u201d \u201cCheck Yuh Self,\u201d \u201cA Divine Plea,\u201d \u201cNo Competition,\u201d and \u201cWho Is to Blame\u201d revealed an early sense of responsibility to the art forms.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>She said her later works \u2014 including, \u201cAsk Yuh Self,\u201d \u201cArtificial Intelligence,\u201d \u201cUncle Roy,\u201d \u201cAssassination Plot,\u201d \u201cWhat Causing That,\u201d \u201cBig Country Song,\u201d and \u201cKen\u201d\u2014 \u201ccontinue the tradition of vision, social consciousness and fearless commentary.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_80180\" style=\"width: 484px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80180\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caribbeanlife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/trinidadian-michelle-henry-cultural-voice-2026-01-15-nk-cl02.jpg?quality=51&amp;w=474\" alt=\"Michelle Henry poses with her saxophone.\" width=\"474\" height=\"700\" title=\"\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-80180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"image-caption\">Michelle Henry poses with her saxophone.<\/span><span class=\"image-credit\">Photo by Leonardo DeSilva<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>As a musical leader, Henry was musical director for Queen of the Road: A Calypso Rose Musical (2024), which she called \u201ca profound honor.\u201d<br \/>\nHenry founded a female saxophone quartet and leads Michelle Henry &amp; Encore, expanding spaces for musical excellence and representation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Her lyrics earned national recognition: second place in Trinidad and Tobago&#8217;s 50th Anniversary Independence Calypso Monarch (2012) with \u201cOur National Watchwords,\u201d Calypso Monarch Finalist and Top 20 Awardee in 2020 with \u201cThe Guest List,\u201d and back-to-back Protective Arms Calypso Monarch titles in 2023 and 2024 with \u201cPeace Survey\u201d and \u201cWhen De Fighting Start.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Her 2023 calypso, \u201cPeace Survey,\u201d is a powerful statement against violence and crime, promoting unity, reflection, and love during a time of national urgency.<br \/>\nBeyond the stage, Henry said she is \u201cdeeply committed to cultural preservation, education, and mentorship.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Through teaching, research, workshops, and her ongoing series \u201cConversations in Calypso,\u201d Henry said she explores the meaning, history, and relevance of the art form.<br \/>\nGuided by faith and gratitude, she said musical gifts are \u201cmeant to be shared to uplift others.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In addition to her artistic work, Henry is a sergeant in the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Band, using music as a bridge between institutions and communities\u2014extending her commitment to service, dialogue, and national development.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>On Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, Henry released her latest song, \u201cEnjoy Your Life,\u201d in Trinidad and Tobago.<br \/>\nShe said Ortniel \u201cTobago Crusoe\u201d Bacchus composed the song, which was arranged and produced by songwriters and music producers Trinidadian Gil Figaro, Sr. and Charles Dougherty, a Jamaican-born, Brooklyn-based saxophonist extraordinaire.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Figaro, chairman and founder of New Jersey-based Sunshine Awards, also wrote the hits \u201cMy Mother\u2019s Hands\u201d and \u201cFour Times Blessed.\u201d<br \/>\nRecorded at Krystal Sounds Recording Studio in Brooklyn, Henry said \u201cEnjoy Your Life\u201d carries a \u201cdeeply personal meaning,\u201d as it is dedicated to her father, Clive \u201cChico\u201d Henry.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The chorus goes: \u201cEnjoy your life\/Enjoy your life\/You never know how much longer you will survive\/Just do what you have to do\/And above all yourself be true\/Because you never, never, never, know\/When the sun going to set on you.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Through her leadership, voice, instrument, scholarship, and service, Henry carries the performing arts conscience forward\u2014honoring legacies while ensuring its relevance for future generations.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michelle A.
