Hopkins has described the world premiere of The Jacqueline Hopkins Choir on Oct. 12 at Fenimore Street United Methodist Church (FSUMC) in Brooklyn, the church of her childhood, as &#8220;a very moving experience on many levels.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hopkins told <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Caribbean Life<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> on Tuesday, Oct. 28, that the 136-year-old church, at the corner of Fenimore <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Street<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and Rogers <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Avenue<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, is where she, her Jamaican-born mother, her Grenville, N.C.-born father, and her siblings worshipped every Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She said she felt &#8220;great nostalgia and pride&#8221; in launching her choir&#8217;s &#8220;world premiere<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> there. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_78129\" style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78129\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-78129\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caribbeanlife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/world-premiere-of-the-jacqueline-hopkins-choir-2025-10-30-nk-cl02.jpg?quality=51&amp;w=525\" alt=\"Jacqueline Hopkins with music sheets after world premiere of The Jacqueline Hopkins Choir at FSUMC.\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" title=\"\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-78129\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"image-caption\">Jacqueline Hopkins with music sheets after world premiere of The Jacqueline Hopkins Choir at FSUMC.<\/span><span class=\"image-credit\">Photo by Nelson A. King<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I felt that my parents were looking on from heaven and applauding along with the congregation,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Hopkins said. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In addition, I felt excited to share my music with the public.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She said the premiere was &#8220;an overwhelming success because the crowd clapped enthusiastically, and for a long time, but several people also screamed with glee.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hopkins said, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This was only the beginning,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> as she has a goal to perform all 10 movements of her Requiem at as many churches as possible in the near future.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On Aug. 28, 2022, Hopkins said she sang excerpts of her work at FSUMC in memory of her parents.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">More recently, in <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">August<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> 2025, she said she established the Jacqueline Hopkins Choir. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hopkins, who has lived in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn, her entire life, said she is the &#8220;proud daughter<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> of the late Harold and Louise Hopkins and is also &#8220;proud<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> of her Jamaican heritage. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_78130\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78130\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-78130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caribbeanlife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/world-premiere-of-the-jacqueline-hopkins-choir-2025-10-30-nk-cl03.jpg?quality=51&amp;w=700\" alt=\"Members of The Jacqueline Hopkins Choir&#039;s world premiere at FSUMC.\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" title=\"\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-78130\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"image-caption\">Members of the Jacqueline Hopkins Choir&#8217;s world premiere at FSUMC. <\/span><span class=\"image-credit\">Photo by Nelson A. Pointer, mother of classical violinist Noel Pointer, as a choir member at Brooklyn&#8217;s I.S. 61.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She said she continued to study music at Hunter College, where she was a member of the choir under the direction of maestro Paul F. Mueller.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If I had never been in the choir under Paul F. Mueller, I would never have written my Requiem,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Hopkins said. &#8220;It would be impossible. He inspired me. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;If there were no Paul F. Mueller, there would not be a Hopkins Requiem,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> she stressed, stating that Prof. Mueller taught her Mozart&#8217;s Requiem and Faur\u00e9&#8217;s Requiem.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hopkins said the works she performed at Hunter College included the Requiem Masses of Gabriel Faur\u00e9 and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At the height of the pandemic, Hopkins said she spent two years composing her own Requiem entitled &#8220;The Hopkins Requiem.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The two selections The Jacqueline Hopkins Choir performed, to rave reviews, during Worship Service at FSUMC, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">on Oct. 12<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, were &#8220;Rex Tremendae<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and &#8220;Jerusalem.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jamaican-American classical composer Jacqueline L.
