(VINCI) at El Caribe Country Club on Strickland Avenue in Brooklyn. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Although, like everything else, there were minor obstacles along the way, including a stroke which I experienced in 2017, I have continued to provide our communities and countries alike with beautiful, enjoyable music,&#8221; Adams, a three-time Grenada Independence and Calypso Monarch in New York, told <\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Caribbean Life<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> over the weekend.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I&#8217;m still going through therapy and medical treatment, especially for constant pain on my left hip,&#8221; added the four-time Calypso Monarch finalist in Grenada, and twice second runner-up, with hits like &#8220;Take a Bow,&#8221; &#8220;Rise <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Up<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8221; and &#8220;Bumsy.&#8221; &#8220;I still perform as I see fit, by God&#8217;s grace.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Adams, who was also twice Soca Monarch finalist in Grenada and founder of the House of Fire Calypso Tent in New York, said he introduced one of Grenada&#8217;s traditional mass, &#8220;Shortknee,&#8221; to the West Indian-American Labor Day Carnival in Brooklyn. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He said his mas band, &#8220;500 Strong,&#8221; has been named Band of the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Year,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in the small band <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">category,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for three consecutive years, 2013-2015, in the West Indian-American Day Carnival Parade on Brooklyn&#8217;s Eastern Parkway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">February<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Internationally acclaimed dancehall icon Sean Paul has unveiled a vibrant music video for his latest single, &#8220;Greatest,&#8221; which is featured on the trailblazing Dutty Money Riddim. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ronnie Thomlinson, the Brooklyn-based Jamaican entertainment publicist, told Caribbean Life on Thursday that the video, directed by innovative director Ruption, is &#8220;a visual feast that perfectly complements the infectious energy of the track, with dynamic visuals and pulsating rhythms.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Produced by Rvssian, renowned producer and owner of Head Concussion Records, Tomlinson, the chief executive officer of the New York-based Destine Media, said, &#8220;&#8216;<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Greatest&#8217; &#8220;Ohh Ahh,&#8221; and &#8220;Who Let The Dogs Out,&#8221; during the gala affair organized by the Far Rockaway, Queens-based La &#8220;V&#8221; en Rose Productions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Haitian-born Rose Guerrier, founder and president of La &#8220;V<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> en Rose Productions, shared the role of Master\/Mistress of Ceremonies with her cousin, attorney Jacques M. Leandre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;In my 34-plus-years on stage, performing from Antigua to Zimbabwe, I still find the most pleasure in performing to a well-dressed seated audience,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Douglas told <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Caribbean Life<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> exclusively <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">afterwards<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. &#8220;On Saturday, the 16th of March, at the Queens Museum, that was perfection. Casey was 45. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Grenadian-born Gentle Benjamin \u2013 the<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">producer of the defunct, long-running, New York-based Caribbean TV cultural program Culture Share \u2013 said Casey, also known as<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Stutzmcgee<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was a first-generation New Yorker whose mother was Panamanian-born Julieta Benjamin. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Benjamin told <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Caribbean Life<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> on Tuesday that Casey died from pulmonary thromboembolism and that he had received his GRAMMYs with the band Robert Glasper Experiment in 2013 and 2015.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Benjamin said Casey began showing an interest in jazz at age 4, playing the saxophone at age 8, and performing at age 12.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Growing up in legendary Jamaica, Queens, home of &#8220;Jamaica funk,&#8221; <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Casey was taken<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> under the wings and mentored by renowned musicians such as Weldon Irvine, Denzell Miller, Bernard Wright, Donald Blackman, and Bill Jacobs,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Benjamin said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">From there, he said, Casey attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and the Performing Arts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Benjamin said Casey received first place as a presidential scholar in the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts as a student. President Bill Clinton presented this award to him at the White House. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Benjamin said Casey&#8217;s attendance at the New School University\/Mannes Jazz Program &#8220;allowed him to forge a working relationship with his mentors and professors,&#8221; some of whom included Joe Chambers, Reggie Workman, Vincent Herring, Buster Williams, and the late Betty Carter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At 14, Benjamin said, &#8220;Casey had the opportunity to play<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> with the late Grover Washington on WNBC TV-NY and was selected on two occasions to perform and record two CDs in Los Angeles with the GRAMMYS &#8220;all American High School GRAMMY Band.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55717\" style=\"width: 667px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55717\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-55717\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caribbeanlife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/nigy-boy-mash-up-mashramani-2024-02-29-nk-cl01.jpg?w=657\" alt=\"Nigy Boy performing in Guyana.\" width=\"657\" height=\"700\" title=\"\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-55717\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"image-caption\">Nigy Boy performing in Guyana. <\/span><span class=\"image-credit\">Photo by Paul Andrew Abram<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">May<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Visually impaired, Queens-based dancehall singer Nigy Boy continues his meteoric rise to global superstardom, having achieved what some say may be a first for a dancehall artist. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Last week, Caribbean-American Assembly Member Alicia Hyndman invited Nigy Boy, 23, whose real name is Nigel Hector, to be a special guest on &#8220;Queens Day<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in Albany during a New York State Assembly session. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hyndman announced in her presentation that the singer has been working for her as an office intern. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;He&#8217;s been my intern, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and he<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> hails from Springfield Gardens, Queens,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> she said. &#8220;So, while we have him here, I&#8217;d like to introduce him. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;He&#8217;s a reggae superstar, and, most weekends, he could be in Guyana, Jamaica, Bahamas,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> she added. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In a historic move, Nigy Boy was welcomed to the floor by House Speaker Carl Heastie, whose grandfather hailed from the Bahamas, who thanked Nigy Boy for his &#8220;contribution to music and arts.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Continue your great work, and know you&#8217;re always welcome here,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Heastie urged. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In addition to pursuing his musical dreams, Nigy Boy is a student at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Long Island, majoring in political science and history.
