The entertainment was great, and the refreshments were delicious. We had a wonderful time.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Samuels said celebrating Rita Marley&#8217;s legacy was a &#8220;heartfelt and inspiring reminder of her contributions to reggae, culture and community.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;The Garden That Rita Grew,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> an evocative exhibit celebrating Rita Marley&#8217;s legacy as an influential figure in reggae culture and a foundational voice for Jamaican heritage, was on display at the Jamaica Consulate General in New York from Nov. 18-20.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_69405\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69405\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-69405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caribbeanlife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/celebrating-the-legacy-of-rita-marley-2025-01-02-nk-cl03.jpg?w=700\" alt=\"Donisha Prendergast, curator of \u201cThe Garden That Rita Grew\u201d exhibit, with Marc Farrell, CEO and Founder of Ten To One Rum.\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" title=\"\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-69405\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"image-caption\">Donisha Prendergast, curator of \u201cThe Garden That Rita Grew\u201d exhibit, with Marc Farrell, CEO and Founder of Ten To One Rum. <\/span><span class=\"image-credit\">Photo by Robert Lee Sims III<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Curated by her eldest granddaughter, Donisha Prendergast, the exhibit offers a deeply personal narrative that spans generations, highlighting Rita Marley&#8217;s impact on her family, community, and the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Through an artful blend of painting, photography, vinyl panels, and carefully chosen quotes, Prendergast told <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Caribbean Life<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that she presents &#8220;a granddaughter&#8217;s lens<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> on her grandmother&#8217;s life and work, creating &#8220;a reflective space for viewers to experience the resilience, creativity, and love that Rita Marley embodies.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Prendergast said this exhibit is &#8220;not only a tribute to Rita Marley&#8217;s journey but also a platform for broader conversations on heritage, cultural preservation, and generational healing.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">By staging &#8220;The Garden That Rita Grew<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> as a preview at the Heritage Awards, an annual honor ceremony hosted by the Jamaica Consulate General New York, Prendergast the Consulate honors Rita Marley&#8217;s legacy alongside Jamaica&#8217;s other impactful figures, creating &#8220;a space for visitors to connect with stories of Jamaican icons who have transformed and uplifted communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;The purpose of &#8216;The Garden That Rita Grew&#8217; extends beyond celebrating a single life; it aims to foster cultural memory and support Rita Marley&#8217;s vision of community empowerment,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Prendergast said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She said all artwork on display is available for purchase, with proceeds directed toward the Rita Marley Girls Center (RMGC) in Trench Town, Jamaica.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Prendergast said this center, a project of the Bob Marley &amp; Rita Marley Foundation in partnership with the Ghetto Youths Foundation, is designed to support young women in Rita Marley&#8217;s community by providing resources in mentorship, life skills, professional development, and mental health support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;By creating a safe space for young women aged 17-25, the center helps to inspire and equip future generations to lead lives of purpose and empowerment, reflecting Rita Marley&#8217;s enduring commitment to community upliftment,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> she said. &#8220;Ultimately, &#8216;The Garden That Rita Grew<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8216;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is a call to recognize the power of storytelling, preservation, and community support.
